The performance of interlinings manufactured from nonwoven fabrics balances strength and softness. When strength is more important than softness, the quantity of conventional latex binder and/or melamine-formaldehyde resin added to the nonwoven fabric is increased, which increases durability and stiffness and degrades tactile hand. Rohm and Haas Company, however, has developed binder prototypes via a proprietary polymerization process that improve strength by 50 percent without any degradation in hand. With this prototype, processing requires less melamine-formaldhyde resin to achieve equivalent durability. Experiments compare the performance of the conventional latex binder with that of the binder prototype on polyester nonwoven fabrics. 7 refs.
