Nonwoven products may require a fiber coarseness and resiliency not characteristic of common upland cotton varieties. Researchers grew Dessi (gossypium aboreum) cotton, an Asian variety, and subjected the harvested fibers to tests with high volume instruments (HVI) and Uster's Advanced Fiber Information System (AFIS). HVI data comprised measurements of micronaire, length, strength, and elongation percentage. AFIS data comprised measurements of nonlint percentage, short fiber percentage, and neps. The Dessi cottons exhibited the desired fiber coarseness and stiffness, but growing conditions, the application of growth regulators, and harvesting methods have considerable influences on these properties. The unusually low nep content of the Dessi cotton is also an advantage for nonwoven fabric manufacturing.
