Nonwoven fabric characterization and testing maximizes production control, process development, product testing and quality control, research, and product specifications. Current standardized tests measure absorption, abrasion resistance, bursting strength, electrostatic properties, flammability, optical properties, permeability, repellence, hand, tear, breaking load and elongation, bond strength, and web uniformity. Intrinsic liquid attraction capacity, the pressure of capillary tubes and pore size distribution, and the swelling property of the fabric affect absorbency. Spontaneous liquid absorption and liquid retention techniques measure the amount of liquid absorbed by the nonwoven. Manufacturers measure absorbency using standardized tests, such as moistrue absorption, demand absorbency, liquid retention, and the rate of absorbency. numerous refs.
