Research on the mechanical properties of commercially available nonwoven fabrics used the Kawabata Evaluation System (KES) to test samples. The constructions tested included resin bonded, spunlaced, needle felted, woolen felted, and spun bonded constructions. The testing focused on comparative bending and shear behavior in the machine, crosswise, and bias directions and to compression normal to the fabric plane. Results indicated that the KES was optimal for the evaluation of the mechanical properties of thin and flaccid constructions under low deformation or strains. The KES was not able to evaluate thick and rigid constructions without modification to the test procedures or equipment. The KES, was not able to evaluate thick and rigid constructions without modificatin to the test procedures or equipment. The KES, however, has potential in the development and evaluation of nonwoven fabrics for performance improvements and for new applications. 7 refs.
