Recent reports sponsored by the insurance industry have warned of the potential flammability of nonwoven roll goods and emphasized the importance of fire retardancy. Factory Mutual Engineering and Research published a report sponsored by Allendale Insurance, Arkwright Protection Mutual Insurance, and Factory Mutual International that described a flammability test suitable for nonwoven goods and recommended several loss prevention procedures. Factory Mutual's recommended fire prevention measures, which would require additional sprinkler systems, spacing, packaging, and racking, would cost more than ＄1.25 per square foot of storage space to implement. Members of the nonwovens industry and several insurance companies support additional fire hazard testing and continuing researcher to define methods of making nonwovens more flame and heat resistant.
