Measurement of Pore Characteristics in Nonwoven Fabrics Using Image Analysis.

A reserch project utilized image analysis to measure the pore characteristics of nonwoven fabrics. The analysis system comprised a compound microscope, a charged couple display camera, and computer hardware for digitizing the images. The system measured the size (hydrodynamic diameter and opening diameter), shape (roundness, ellipticity, bilobal, trilobal, etc.), orientation, and placement (aggregated, random, and uniform) of pores in two aramid and two rayon nonwoven fabrics of different densities. The researchers also used the data to estimate theoretical parameters that predict pore size distribution. 16 refs.
