Courtaulds Fibers Incorporated developed lyocell, a generic manmade cellulose fiber available as two or staple fiber, bright or delustered. Courtaulds manufactures lyocell by dissolving wool pulp in an amine oxide solvent. The extruded filament is a highly crystalline form of cellulose, which results in very high strength fiber, wet or dry. Because lyocell is inherently hydrophilic, it runs well at high speed in the carding process without static problems. Because lyocell fibers increase their flexibility when wet, they represent an ideal substrate for spun lacing. Lyocell also blends well with other fibers, such as polypropylene, in thermal bonding. Lyocell can be engineered for specific processing equipment. Applications for rayon and lyocell blends include dry and wet wipes, sanitary products, absorbent coil, medical products, coverstock, filters, and floppy disk liners.
