Three important nonwoven fabric manufacturing processes that involve melt spinning are the spunbonding, meltblowing, and flashspinning processes. The spunbonding process comprises melt spinning a thermoplastic polymer, collecting continuous filaments on a moving belt to form webs, and binding the filaments in the webs to form a fabric. Melt blowing and flashspinning processes also consist of one stage from spinning to consolidation, but differ from the spunbonding process in the character of the spinning stage, which affects fiber and fabric properties and structure. Spunbonding and melt blowing use melt spinning, whereas flashspinning yields filaments from a polymer solution of an organic solvent that dissolves the polymer at high temperature and pressure. Because the solution is flashed through a small orifice to yield filaments, the process is a type of dry spinning. 14. refs.
