Researchers used image processing as a tool to determine the trash content in cotton webs. The reproducible results allow the user to distinguish between different knids of trash particles, such as neps, seed coat particles, leaf and wood fragments, and extraneous fibers, and to determine the exact composition of these particles in the cotton. This enables researchers to predict the degree of cleanability of the cotton and the number of uster thick and thin places to be expected in the yarn. Seed coat particles, in particular, proved difficult to separate from the cotton during cleaning processes, whereas researchers easily removed neps, leaf, and wooden fragments. Researchers concluded that a correlation exists between the number of seed coat particles and Uster imperfections in the yarn. 4 refs.
