An important application of image analysis techniques by the nonwoven fabric industry is the characterization of web structures. Histogram modification of the acquired electronic images significantly improves visualization by humans. Spectral analysis in the frequency domain is useful in the global characterization of web structures. Image analysis describes a range of web structures, such as web uniformity, porosity, fiber orientation, fiber diameter in spun bonded webs, and bright and dark defects, with simple parameters. The basic image analysis hardware system comprises a system monitor, video monitor, video camera, microscope or lens, frame grabber board, personal computer, keypad, and focussing controller. 4 refs.
