Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyolefin, and rayon are the primary fibers used in the production of nonwovens in Japan, constituting 85 percent of the total staple fibers consumed. Japanese consumption of staple fibers achieved 140,000 tons in 1995. Primary nonwoven uses of PET include needled automotive nonwoven fabrics. The recycling of used and discarded films and bottles is one method the Japanese use to obtain PET fibers. Uses for polyolefin staple fibers include such thermal bonded nonwovens as diaper coverstock. Polypropylene staple uses include general purpose carpets. Primary consumers of rayon staple fibers include wet laid nonwoven materials for sliding paper doors and packing paper. Resin bonded, spunlaced, and thermal bonded nonwovens are other textile materials that use rayon.
