The production of nonwoven carbon fibre fabrics in Japan is briefly reviewed. Two methods are used. In one case, already carbonized or graphitized fibres are formed into a web by carding or papermaking techniques and the web is then fixed by binders or needle punching. In the other case nonwovens are formed at the same time as the pitch precursor is spun into fibres and the nonwovens are than carbonized or graphitized. This method is further sub-divided according to the process used by the manufacturer. Enduses are in specialized fields (high-temperature furnace materials, heaters and the like). Some production figures and trade names are tabulated.
