Researchers developed an image analysis technique using Fourier transformation of the image to evaluate orientation in fiber assemblies. Independent of the range of orientation, Fourier transformation provided an overestimate of the orientation standard deviation. This also held true for the bimodal image. Regardless of the structural features of the image, the Fourier method proved to be fairly accurate and reliable. Proper windowing and romoval of unwanted frequencies must be performed before measurement. Compared with other methods, the Fourier method ranked behind the direct tracking method, which remains the optimal choice in terms of accuracy. The Fourier method possessed advantage for online quality control. 7 refs.
