Deterioration of mechanical properties in adhesive bonded nonwovens with high web weight is frequently associated with delamination because the binder migrates toward the upper and lower surfaces during drying. The use of a binder with high tenacity and high initial modulus in the manufacture of jute nonwovens can increase bond rigidity between fiber/binder/filber complexes. Polyvinyl acetate and polyacrylate binders are discussed. Hot calendering of the nonwoven significantly increases tenacity. Extension of the jute fibers, not the binder film, primarily controls the breaking extension of the nonwoven. 16 refs.
