An instrument was fabricated for measuring the filtration parameters of filter fabrics. The designs of the apparatus and earlier instruments are described. The new instrument comprises a fabric holder, an absolute filter, an orifice meter, and a valve, suction pump, funnel, ventrui tube, disk, scraper, rotor, hopper, and compressor. One manometer is placed across the fabric sample, and another is placed across th eorifice meter. The apparatus is capable of measuring filtration efficiency, air permeability, pressure drop, and cleaning efficiency. The test instrument was used to measure the filtration parameters of 100 percent polyester needle punched fabrics that are used for dust filtration. The effects of fabric weight, needling density, depth of needle penetration, fiber denier, and scrim on filtration were considered. 31 refs.
