The Polish Textile Institute in Lodz has developed a group of oil absorbent nonwoven fabrics based on polypropylene microfibers. Tests assessed the oil asorbing capacity of flat polypropylene melt blown nonwoven fabrics with varied content per volume (packing density) and fiber fineness of the elementary fibers. Oil absorption performance depended on the size of the free areas in the fabric structure and fiber fineness. Researchers estimated the potential proportion of absorbed substance, held by the forces of adhesion, at 13-26 g/g for nonwovens and 30 g/g for loose microfiber masses. The nonwoven polypropylene fabrics are suitable for repeated use in collecting spilled oil and permit oil recovery via centrifuging, mechanical squeezing, or gravity dripping. 3 refs.
