This paper discusses the use of ultrasonic bonding, as a high tech method of materials processing, in the nonwovens industry. It traces the technological advances of ultrasonic techniques; high-lighting nonwovens' small but growing representation in various market segments, and predicted various opportunities for ultrasonically processed nonwovens as a replacement for other materials in markets such as adult hygiene. The paper offers an overview of recent developments among manufacturers of ultrasonic bonding systems, including the Ultracut precision cutting system for fine grained nonwovens, in the micrometer range, from Aichele Werkzeuge, Germany, and Hermann Ultrashalltechnik GmbH's redesigned Vario-Process welding machine, which features an improved pneumatic system with a proportional valve to provide greater weld and trigger force control.
