A recently developed bicomponent glass fiber (Miraflex) shows promise as an alternative to synthetic fibers in nonwovens applications. The unique three-dimensional structure of this inorganic fiber simulates the crimp in polymeric fibers. This paper presents data from studies of three major textile processes (carding, needling, and air laying) that were conducted with this fiber. The results demonstrate that 100% glass fiber is truly cardable and can be processed on onventional textile equipment. The paper incudes recommendations for specific equipment features and process parameters that were found suitable for processing this fiber.
