Absorbent and biodegradable nonwoven uses PVA binder fibres

International Paper Co. believes that it has overcome the problems commonly encountered when using untreated polyvinyl alcohol fibres in combination with other absorbent fibres to form flushable, biodegradable nonwovens for absorbent products. It has produced a PVA containing nonwoven with superior wet strength. The fabric is medically safe and has sufficient wet strength for use in such items as wraps, wipes and absorbent pads. The nonwoven fabric can also be prepared as absorbent core materials by adding superabsorbent fibres to the matrix and bonding these together with the PVA fibres to increase the fluid holding capacity.
