Conventional bonding methods for nonwoven fabrics include chemical, thermal, and mechanical bonding. Hydroentanglement, a type of mechanical bonding, entangles the fibers with high pressure water jets. Raw materials processed include polyester, rayon, cotton, wood pulp, Nomex, Nomex/Kevlar, acrylic, and polypropylene fibers. Key components of hydroentangling include web formation with fiber composition, water entangling, water filtration, conditioning, drying, aftertreatment, curing, and roll-up. An alternating treatment of both web sides with water jets results in higher web strength and lower energy consumption. Use of a multistage hydroentanglement system depends on web weight, titer, desired strength range, production speed, and web support.
