The scope of this paper is two-fold: to review appropriate application methods to apply chemical binders to nonwoven substrates, and to highlight new binder developments and new nonwoven applications using chemical binders. Nonwovens are complex structures when considered in either physical, mechanical or chemical terms. They are highly engineered fabrics and as such require an engineered binder along with an engineered application process, to maximize all aspects of their performance. The paper also briefly reviews emulsion binder chemistry and methods to form the final bonded nonwoven structure from web and binder components.
