Environmentally friendly (biodegradable or compostable) nonwoven fabrics can be formed from the thermal calendering of a blend of cotton and cellulose acetate fibers. The physical behavior of the resulting fabrics is determined by the properties of the component fibers, the thermal conditions for bonding, and additional pre-treatment conditions that alter the bonding behavior between fibers. It has been found that solvent treatment of the fiber blend and appropriate thermal bonding processing parameters substantially enhance web tensile behavior. Some results of interactions between solvent pretreatment and thermal bonding are presented.
