Image analysis hardware and software techniques used to characterize the structure of nonwoven webs are discussed. Hardware is discussed first and emphasis is placed on selecting hardware to accommodate a variety of webs structures. Then, examples of web structrual features measured by image analysis in our laboratory will be given. These structures consist of pores, fiber orientation, web uniformity, bright/dark defects, fiber diameters and shot.
