A study examined the use of image analysis to evaluate polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene, and rayon nonwoven fabrics for coverstock, filters, and interlinings. Bonding systems for the sample nonwoven fabrics included chemical, melt blown, spun bonded, and thermal bonded systems. Researchers measured air permeability, filtration, and fiber orientation using an image analyzing system. A gamma distribution function represented the circle radii inscribed in the polygons of the pores of the nonwoven fabrics. Gamma distribution mean and variance significantly correlated with the air permeability properties of the nonwoven fabrics. Researchers successfully predicted fiber orientation by analyzing the direction of the edges in the polygon images. Probable radius, mean, and radial variance of the gamma distribution function successfully predicted the fabrics's filtration properties. 24 refs.
