On-line measurement of specific characteristics of nonwovens in the production process offers the advantage of detecting defects during manufacture. The integration of quality monitoring into process automation in nonwovens production requires a knowledge of the influences of process variables in web forming and consolidation on nonwovens properties associated with product quality. This report details the requirements, if a needled nonwoven is to perform its intended function in practical use and the technical and technological conditions required in the manufacturing process. The results described relate to needled nonwovens in polypropylene fibre for geotextile stabilisation purposes and to lightweight needled nonwovens for filtration and lightweight protective textiles in Nomex, Feflon and Twaron high-performance fibres.
