A study examined the structure and properties of multilayer melt blown microfiber webs (webs with multiple layers within each microfiber). Researchers used polyethylene, polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polyurethane, polyvinyl alcohol, and poly-4-methyl-1-pentene to produce multilayer webs with alternating layers. The method allows the variation and control of interfiber bonding to obtain a wide range of web properties by manipulating polymer combinations, polymer ratios, the number of layers within the microfibers, and layer arrangements. This approacy differs from that used to manufacture multilayer films in that both polymer components are present at the surface of each microfiber and can influence interfiber bonding. 8 refs.
