Test Method for Bond Strength Measurement: A Proposal.

Research devised a multiple needle penetration test that measures bond strength in fiber web nonwoven self bonded and resin bonded fabrics. Study showed that the single needle used in previous tests did not penetrate through pores in the fabric as believed, but punctured the fabric. The new test uses a needle board containing up to 500 identical conically profiled needles. Results showed that there was little need to use more than 100 needles in the board. The test measured the thickness of the test fabrics; calculated fiber diameter, length per unit area of the fiber, and the I factor; and calculated the average energy-to-rupture per bond in the test fiber webs. The values measured by the multiple needle tests compared well with the single needle test rsults. 11 refs.
