Air laid nonwoven fabrics include those manufactured from pulp based and manmade fibers. Pulp based air laid nonwovens are used for absorbent products. The air laid pulp sector of the industry is active due to recent consolidations, acquisitions, and expansions. Despite overcapacity issues, suppliers are focusing on new markets, such as diaper cores. The air laid marekt may be at a 75 percent utilization rate. Manmade air laid nonwoven fabrics, which have higher loft, have applications in home furnishings, filtration products, and automotive interiors. Slower line speeds affect competitiveness with crosslappers and new highloft technology. New air laid pulp suppliers include Airformed Composites Incorporated and the Fort James Nonwovens Group. Concert, Kem-Wove, and Union Wadding are expanding operations.
