A letter to the editor of Textile Research Journal responded to a series of articles by B. Pourdeyhimi, R. Ramanathan, and R. Dent addressing the measuremtn of fiber orientation in nonwoven fabrics. In that series, the authors used simulated images to study three algorithms: direct tracing, Fourier transforms, and flow field analysis. Researchers at the RACA and CID-CSIC in Spain investigated quantitatively the fit between simulated images and the three algorithms. Results disproved conclusions by B. Pourdeyhimi et al. and demonstrated that the orientation distribution function was not satisfactory. 5 refs.
