The range of nylon 66 staple fibres offered for wet laid nonwoven end-uses by Novalis is presented. Following a general comparison of the fibre's properties and dyeability with nylon 6, polyester, polypropylene and viscose, the use of uncrimped fibre to produce wet laid nonwovens for medical products, filtration membranes and battery separators is described. The main properties of nylon 66 that are important for wet laying are relatively high surface tension, compatibility with hydrophilic finishes, low count per filament, high dye affinity and a high melting and softening point.
