A method for post-treating a laminated precursor nonwoven web, which includes layers of thermoplastic man-made fibres and at least one layer of cellulose-based staple natural fibres is described in this article. The web is consolidated by heating and drawing in the machine direction which results in: reduced pore size; enhanced breathability, strength, handle, absorbent capacity, wicking and barrier properties. Additional mechanical compacting can be undertakien to further refine the web consolidation. It is also suggested that this method can be applied to other nonwovens made from man-made fibres, such as hydroentangled or needled webs, and laminated combinations of these and other webs such as air-laid. The material is particularly suitable for medical applications such as protective apparel, face masks, diapers or sanitary napkins, dressings, wipes, wicks and surgical drapes.
