this paper reports on recent development in nonwoven fabrics which having high degree of porosity exhibit enhanced absorbance capacity. absorbent capacities are typically much higher than conventional absorbent materials such as cotton, rayon, tissue and fluff pulp. several types of super-absorbent materials have been developed. these materials have in common a high degree of hydrophilic character and insolubility in aqueous fluids. the general structure of a superabsorbent is a high molecular weight hydrophilic polymer which is crosslinked to provide insolubility both natural and synthetic polymers have been used. the first super absorbent was a starch acrylonitrile graft. since then, crosslinked carboxymethyl cellulose and crosslinked polyacrylate super-absorbents have been developed. test procedure is described and results of a test program are plotted and tabulated. these materials have broad use in medical applications
