various coating methods have been used successfully on a wide variety of closely woven and knit fabrics. however, when loosely woven or open knit fabrics are coated by conventional means, strike-through becomes a major problem. fabrics that have an uneven surface due to the presence of long float yarns or knobby-type yarns pose a different problem. if you knife-coat these uneven surfaced fabrics the backcoating mix tends to fill in all the valleys' in the fabric and scrape most of the coatings off the hills. ' the end result is a very uneven coating, locally heavy in the shallow portions of the fabric, and little or no coating on the raised yarns most of these problems can be solved by the use of frothed and/or foamed backcoating formulations
