segregation of each effluent from a manufacturing process provides potential for employing membrane-based treatment techniques, capable of selectively separating and concentrating for recovery, the useful polluting compounds. the revenues can defray a part or all of the costs of treatment. this approach has been brought to reality by the advent of a new cheap pretreatment system for removing colloidal membrane foulants from effluents prior to reverse osmosis concentration, and by the steadily improving capacities of the new generation of non cellulose membranes. examples are given of membrane treatment of effluent from abattoirs, acetic acid production, coal mining, fishing industry, wood pulping, wool scouring, all without pretreatment and for the oil refinery, textile dyeing, paper making industries together with renovation of cooling tower blowdown waters.
