In 1997, nonwoven products consumed approximately 80 million pounds of bleached cotton. Primary markets included absorbent products, personal hygiene products, home products, and medical textiles. An introduction to nonwoven cotton fabrics addresses ginning; the physical properties of cotton fibers, including micronaire, length, and strength; preparation of raw cotton, including scouring, bleaching, fiber finishing, cellulose chemistry, absorbency, and the effects of micronaire on nep formation web forming processes, including dry laid, wet laid, and melt spun processes; and bonding techniques, including needle punching, hydroentangling, chemical bonding, thermal bonding, and stitch bonding. 5 refs.
