The United States cotton nearby futures price decreased to 64.72 cents per pound as of May 5, 1998. Mill consumption slightly increased to 11.5 million bales for the 1997-1998 season. The United States produced an estimated 18.8 million bales of cotton in 1997-1998. Growers planted fewer acres of cotton, in part due to the decreases in cotton prices. The campaign by Cotton Incorporated to promote its Cotton Seal resulted in greater consumer awareness of cotton and demonstrated a potential market for personal hygiene products containing 100 percent cotton. Roll goods manufactures increasingly use cotton. Veratec introduced a superopened cotton for the roll goods industry. Cotton processing techniques, such as hydroentangling and spunlacing, are increasingly popular internationally.
