A review of nonwoven fabrics manufactured from natural fibers covers fiber treatment and applications. A critical advance in fiber treatment has been the development of a genetically modified flax that enables bark removal without damage to the fiber. This modification significantly extends flax fiber applications. These applications include geotextiles, medical-surgical supplies, automotive fabrics, packaging, and insulation. One novel technique irradiates nonwoven fabrics with an electron beam for grafting, resulting in products with antimicrobial and ion exchange properties. Jute has strong applications in geotextiles, particularly for soil erosion control, mulching, and road and pavement construction. Cotton and flax are suitable for use as insulation to replace rock wool.
