An autocatalytic method can be used to coat nonwovens with metal. The process consists of pre- and post-treatment and coating. The pretreatment sensitizes and activates the substrate for good adhesion with the metal. During coating, control of the thickness and homogeneity of the coating are critical. Post-treatment involves rinsing and heating. Nickel, copper, cobalt, iron, and some of their alloys can be used in either the amorphous or crystalline state. Metal-coated nonwovens can be used for screening and shielding in medicine and construction. For example, metal-coated root insulation can protect against electromagnetic fields from power lines. These fabrics can also be used in filters and percolating sensors. 14 refs.
