A web monitor more economical than the nucleonic transversing units adapted from the paper industry is needed. The development of a laser card web monitor based on principles used by the Autocount optical monitoring instrument is reviewed. The first attempt to produce an optical method of measuring web regularity suitable for nonwoven cards used a fluorescent light tube as a continuous light source. Fiber-optic bundles and finally laser tubes were then tried. The laser web scanner can provide the basis for a nonwoven web irregularity index. 7 refs.
