An overview of the nonwoven fabric industry in the People's Republic of China describes its scale and distribution, availability of raw materials, technological developments, marketing, applications, and trends for market growth. Over the last 20 years, China's nonwoven fabric industry experienced a dramatic growth rate, increasing from 3,000 tons in 1978 to 300,000 tons in 1997. Currently, the fiber and chemical industries in China supply the raw materials for the manufacture of nonwoven fabrics. Chemical fibers account for 85 percent of all materials used. Applications for these fabrics include coverstock, interlinings, wadding, needled felt for papermaking, needle punched carpets, geotextiles, filtration, sanitary products, and artificial leather. Although China's economy is in transition, it is expected to rebound due to economic reforms.
