Geotextiles can be used in teh soil for foundation structures of civil engineering works. Nonwoven fabrics for geotechnical applications include heat bonded and needle punched fabrics in weights ranging from 100-300 grams per square meter. The use of geomembrane plastic sheeting to seal landfill facilities, water reservoirs, and liquid lagoons led to a demand for thick nonwoven fabrics as cushions to protect the membranes. New developments in the geotextile sector include the addition of a woven scrim to the back of needle punched fabrics and the incorporation of small diameter tubes within the fabric structure to dissipate water. Geotextile research focuses on the use of such products as recycled polypropylene and high extensibility fabrics.
