A study evaluated the movement through surgical gown and drape fabrics of particles comparable in size with bacteria associated with nosocomial infections. Fabric tested included two spun bonded/melt blown/spun bonded (SMS) polypropylene composites with outer spun bonded webs as load bearing layers, spun bonded high density polyethylene, and spun bonded fabric laminated with microporous polymeric membrane. Particles progressively penetrated through the SMS fabrics as the applied pressure increased from 0.2 to 1.0 psi. The highly dense polyethylene spun bonded fabric resisted strikethrough up to 5.0 psi. For the laminated spun bonded fabric, microsphere particles penetrated the fabric but did not penetrate the membrane layer up to 5.0 psi. 12 refs.
