Polyester is important in the manufacture of nonwovens because of its excellent thermoplastic, mechanical, and processing properties. Its ability to bond thermally over a wide temperature range has also contributed to its general use. The efficiency of bonding polyester matrix fibers with binder fibers depends on the technique. Machines used in these techniques include infrared heaters, calenders, through-circulation units, through-circulation conveyor ovens, suction drum ovens, and ultrasonic units. The mechanism of bonding and the history of the development of polyester for this use are summarized. Optimal values for properties, such as crystallinity, strength, and bonding temperatures, are noted. 6 refs.
