The effect of fiber orientation in adhesive-bonded nonwovens on the structure of the bonding agent was examined. The model consisted of two fibers crossed at a defined angle. The bonding agent droplets at the cross-over points were characterized by the wetting angles and by the fiber section covered with the bonding agent. Calculations of the forces in the bonding agent droplets and experimental studies showed that the bonding agent structure depended on the fiber cross-over angle. Air permeability was used to characterize bonding agent structure. In low area weight nonwovens, the air permeability depended on the angle of lay in the fiber lap. With increasing weight, the effect of fiber orientation on both bonding agent distribution and air permeability diminished. 5 refs.
