Production and consumption of nonwoven products has grown rapidly in Japan. This growth is expected to continue during the next several years. Japan produces about 12 percent of the world's nonwoven fabrics. The Japanese nonwovens industry concentrates on high value products. This is reflected in trade statistics, which show Japan as a major nonwovens importer, in terms of fabric volume, but also as a major nonwovens exporter, in terms of value. Many Japanese nonwovens products, such as cellulosic and elastane spunbonded fabrics, are unique. The industry also makes high quality synthetic leather. Extensive modernization is taking place in the industry. All producers are installing the latest spunlacing and meltblowing machines.
