A process devised by the British Textile Technology Group for the manufacture of jute/manmade fiber nonwoven fabrics involved conventional jute batching; breaker card production of heavy sliver; cutting breaker card sliver into processable staple lengths; mixing jute and manmade fibers in jute-heavy ratios; fleece formation using a roller clearer card and a cross layer; and bonding of fibrous layer batts into useful nonwoven structures via needle punching, thermal bonding, calendering, or a combination of these processes. Manmade fibers used in the blends included polyester, polypropylene, and viscose fibers. Fiber fineness ranged from 3.3-18 dtex and staple lengths ranged from 50-90 millimeters. Potential applications include carpet backing, erosion control, automotive molding and noise reduction, agricultural textiles, filters, footwear, and luggage.
