A joint research project of Kajima Corporation and Nippon Sheet Glass Company resulted in a new material that accommodates useful microorganisms in high densities. The nonwoven fabric is made of carbon fibers. It allows large quantities of microbes to inhabit its fine texture. The nonwoven fabric can be used in bioreactors that culture microorganisms to treat wastewater. Carbon fibers of 1-30 microns thick are intertwined to form a thin fabric that is rolled into a cylinder approximately 1 meter in length. Colonies of microbes settle into the fine openings of the nonwoven fabric. When used to treat sewage, the fabric accommodates approximately 30 milligrams of the bacterium methanogen per square centimeter, approximately 40 percent more than on the board made of glass, fibers.
