Image analysis to characterize fiber diameter distribution in nonwoven fabrics uses a distance transform. A binary image creates a distance map that records the distance from each pixel to the background and determines the fiber diameter at any pixel location. Verification involves a series of simulated and real nonwoven fabric images. Samples include a carded web, a relatively dense spun bonded fabric, and a relatively open area bonded spun bonded fabric. Results indicate that the distance transform characterizes fiber diameter distribution in nonwoven fabrics. The image quality must be good enough to allow reliable automatic thresholding of the image. 8 refs.
