A Model fo Calculating the Noise Absorption Capacity of Nonwoven Fiber Webs

Nonwoven fabrics have a wide range of applications as noise control elements. A numerical method calculates their acoustic performance based on the Zwikker and Kosten theory of sound propagation through porous media. Results for nonwoven fabrics manufactured from acrylic, cotton, and polyester fiber were in fair agreement with experimental data. The model yielded the noise absorption coefficients of fiber webs as a function of their thickness and porosity. This relationship has the potential to serve as a guideline for the optimal design of passive control components based on nonwoven fabrics. 11 refs.
