Sorbents aid in the cleanup of oil spills since a sorbent-oil mixture, which behaves differently than a fluid, is easier to retrieve than oil alone. Sorbents can also capture and retain oil for later retrieval. A properly selected sorbent should pick up at least 90 percent of the oil it encounters. The ideal sorbent is oleophilic, hydrophilic, nontoxic, biodegradable, and buoyant, and has a large removal capability, a high oil sorption rate, and a large surface to volume ratio. Cotton has a high potential for use in sorbent systems designed to cleanup oil spills. A good sorbent should be able to handle various types of oil and thicknesses of slicks. Cotton Unlimited has developed the instaSorb highloft cotton web, an oil sorbent nonwoven that takes advantage of cotton's absorbency.
